Over the last several years, there has been a greater interest in returning to a more sustainable way of life. Therefore, many people have made the transition to "off-grid" properties, which are properties that are not connected to the public utility grid. While you may need a water well to get water to your residence on an off-grid property, you may also need a well for livestock purposes.
If you have your own animals to support sustainable living, these animals can require a substantial amount of water. If an additional water well is required, there are a few things to consider before reaching out to a residential well-drilling contractor.
Carefully consider where the well should be located
The water well location can vary depending on what provides the best access to underground aquifers. However, there will likely be multiple points on a single tract of land where a well can be placed. The only issue is with an off-grid property, your land can be a little less accessible and clear, which can make the well installation process a bit more complicated. You may have to place your well in a less-than-ideal location if there are not many clear points that are near your livestock.
Consider how much water your animals need in a day
Most homesteaders who live off the grid will have a small collection of animals meant to provide sustenance only for their own household. For example, you may have a flock of chickens, a few cattle, a few sheep, a horse, and a pig or two. Consider how much water your animals require every day. For a general example, one cow can take in as much as 30 gallons of water per day. Get a rough estimate of what you need so your chosen well-drilling contractor can ensure you have an adequate water supply.
Consider whether you will need a well house
In some cases, a well house will be important in an off-grid setting. Well houses are simple structures built around the well opening, and they were once a common addition to residential properties, but electricity access reduced the reliance on them. Because you don't have access to electricity, your well pump can be vulnerable to freezing up if you live in a cold climate. If you do believe you will need a well house, this can influence your decision about where the well should be drilled. Therefore, it is important to consider your needs when working with a residential water well-drilling service.
