Construction & Contractors Blog
Excavation is a part of any construction job. From putting in new pipes to building a skyscraper that stretches hundreds of feet into the air, construction crews need a hole. There are different kinds of excavation techniques so that the contractors can get the empty hole necessary to do the job. Two of them are blasting and trenching.
Blasting
This kind of excavation involves using explosives and blasting open a hole. The explosives are placed very carefully and in very controlled amounts. The goal is to use as little explosive as possible for the best possible result. The contractor handling the explosive excavation will need to survey the area, look at the plans, and do a lot of math. They need to figure out where to place the explosives, how much to use, and in what order they should be triggered in order to get the desired outcome. It may take a few steps in order to get the full excavation area cleared.
Blasting can work well, but it also has some drawbacks. One is that no matter how carefully the contractor works or the amount or type of explosive they use, there are always going to be problems with precision. You just aren't going to get precise results from explosives, so more work will have to be done to get to that necessary precision.
Trenching
Unlike blasting, trenching uses heavy equipment to create the hole. There are a number of kinds of trenching equipment that can be used, depending on the size of the necessary hole and how deep it needs to go. The trenching equipment can cut through the soil and the rock easily, making a nice, neat trench that can be expanded as necessary.
There are many reasons to use trenching for excavation instead of blasting, including the fact that trenching doesn't waste a lot of material. The soil and rocks that are generated when the trencher is working can be used to fill the hole back in as necessary. Trenching is also quieter and doesn't generate the same amount of vibrations that blasting does. If the work is being done in a high population area, cutting down noise and vibration is going to make everyone a lot happier.
Without excavation, a lot of construction sites would hardly be feasible to work. If you have excavation needs, talk to a company that offers trenching services and find out why they may be better than blasting for your situation.
