5 Ways To Make Your Parking Lot More Aesthetically Pleasing

Construction & Contractors Blog

A parking lot is often a necessity for commercial buildings and lots. But that doesn't mean you have to simply slap some asphalt in front of your building, even if it doesn't fit your aesthetic. With some careful planning, you can design a parking area that is aesthetically pleasing while still being effective and useful. Here are a few methods to consider.

1. Break Up Parking. You may need to provide a certain amount of parking, but does that mean it must all be in the same place? No. If a single expanse of asphalt doesn't work for your building style or the vibe you want to project, break it up into two or more spaces.

2. Add Landscaping. A little greenery can go a long way toward making any parking area look attractive and appealing. Trees, bushes, planted medians, pedestrian pathways, hedges, and other landscape features can transform a parking lot into a more gardenlike environment. It remains gardenlike it's full of cars and when it's empty of cars.

3. Depress the Lot. Could you camouflage the lot by lowering its elevation? This is a more complex procedure than using surface lots, but it allows you to hide the lot and cars from casual view. With ramps to go up and down and the addition of low walls and greenery, your customers may arrive not even knowing there is a parking lot.

4. Rethink the Location. Some businesses need to make their parking spaces obvious to customers. They may also have to abide by zoning rules as to where the parking lot can be located. Others have more leeway in finding just the right spot for the parking. Instead of placing it in front of your building, for instance, why not add it to the side or place it behind and include a fun walkway to guide customers to the entrance?

5. Use Creative Design. There's no rule that says all parking lots must be squares or rectangles. Have fun with the design to achieve a look more appropriate to your business's style. Give it some curves, a little casual randomness, or a surprise for guests to discover. While you need to keep practicalities in mind, a creative designer can find ways to still make it fun.
