The heating system that your home uses to keep warm during the winter months can be among the most important components. However, homeowners will often struggle with keeping these appliances running as efficiently and effectively as possible.
Review Potential Heating System Upgrades
If you are finding that it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep your home warm, this could be an indication that the heating system is suffering enough wear to have a major impact on its overall performance. As a result, it may be time to reach out to a heating contractor and ask about replacing the unit with an upgraded version that will be able to offer your home a more consistent heating output. In addition to this major upgrade, there may be other upgrades that you can make to your home that can improve heating performance. An example of this upgrade could be using window treatments that can reduce the chilling effect that cold glass can have on the interior of the home.
Assess Potential Drafts In The Home
Drafts are a major source of heating performance problems. When drafts develop, they can lead to the heating system having to expend far more energy to keep the home warm. Finding and closing drafts is a project that should be done at the start of every winter. The cold outdoor temperature can make finding these drafts easier, as they will potentially be more noticeable to the touch. Once you have found a draft, it should be closed as quickly as possible. In many cases, this may be done through the use of caulk or other sealing agents to close the draft that is allowing the air to escape. If there are drafts around your entry doors, replacing the weather stripping may be able to stop or at least significantly reduce the strength of these drafts.
Protect The Heating System During The Off-Season
The summer months can be a surprisingly dangerous time for a home's heating system. During these months, it can be possible for the heating system to suffer damage from pests nesting in it, corrosion forming on important components, or even large amounts of dust. Protecting the heating unit during the dormant months will not be difficult, but it is a step that is often neglected with potentially significant results. Ideally, the heating unit should be covered with a breathable fabric that keeps debris and pests away from the unit while keeping condensation from getting trapped between the cover and the exterior of the heating unit.
