Hiring An Excavation Company To Help Prepare Your Site For Construction

Construction & Contractors Blog

Construction projects require a large amount of preparation before the construction process can begin. Often an excavating company needs to come and move soil around and remove or add some materials to get the site ready. Contractors will often hire an outside service to make the process more efficient.

Excavation Contractors

In general, excavating companies offer specializes services that require some heavy equipment like bulldozers, excavators, and backhoes to accomplish. Sometimes that work involves removing large amounts of soil from a site, and other times it may mean leveling the site to create a solid, flat base for the foundation of a building to sit on.

The type of work these contractors do can vary from day to day, but it is not always limited to just digging holes. They may dig out an area one day, and the next fill kit back in with gravel or other materials and level the material to create a drain field or some other structure, but an excavating company can be an integral part of the construction project.

Leveling Your Site

A building site on a hillside can be difficult to build on because there is no level base. Because some of the material that is there will need removing to level the site, you may want to have your excavating company pull material from the hill and use it to build the low side of the hill up.

In most cases, the soil will need to be amended with some other materials like gravel or stone to make it stable, but using the earth already on-site can save you some cost. Since the hill needs to be excavated anyway, not having to remove the soil from the site can save a lot of time for the excavating company.

An experience excavating company can take all the high spots out of the hill and fill the low areas and blend it all so well that you will be hard-pressed to tell where the original highspots were when the work is complete. Making it look natural is a great way to help retain the look and feel of the land around the site, even though there is now a building there that was not there before.

Drainage Lines

While you have an excavating company on-site, you can have them put in trenches for drainage lines and utilities that need to come to the site. Often these trenches are easier to put in with a small excavator or backhoe, and once the work is done, the excavating company can backfill the trenches.

While other machines can trench the site, if you already have the excavating company on the site, it may be easier and cheaper to have them do the work while there are there.
